The Conquest of Everest (1953) (DVD)
This documentary presents the many efforts that were made to reach the peak of Mount Everest during the early 20th century. While acknowledging earlier expeditions, particularly the attempts by British explorer George Mallory, the film focuses on the 1953 excursion, which resulted in New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Nepali guide Tenzing Norgay reaching the summit. Director George Lowe, who was present on the historic '53 climb, personally shot much of the footage in the production.
