Eleven-year old Lous life was turned upside down when her father walked out on her mother and two sisters ten months ago. But things become even more chaotic when her estranged grandfather Doyle (John Hurt) moves in to the familys rickety, rented home. Doyle turns the household upside-down with his unique sense of fun and madness, not least because hes becoming ill and befuddled - living largely in the past. As Lou and Doyle's relationship develops - through adventures and mishaps - Lous tough shell begins to be chipped away until she ultimately understands what it is to be loved.
