This textbook provides a wide-ranging and accessible examination of the issues of immigration, ethnicity and racism in Britain during the years 1815 to 1945. The study, from the Irish immigration of the mid-19th century to the eve of post-war influxes, examines the key period in British immigration history. The book tackles four basic themes: firstly, why so many immigrants made their way to Britain during the years 1815 to 1945; secondly, the geographical, gender and economic divisions of the newcomers; thirdly, the topic of ethnicity, focusing upon a wide range of issues, including religious, philanthropic, educational, social and political activities; and, finally, the reactions of British society to the newcomers.
